Introduction to Plastic Surgery

Plastic Surgery is one of the most unique surgical branches. It is one of the most ancient branches but yet is the fastest evolving and everchanging. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is a non-organ specific branch. It deals with burns on one hand and chemical peeling on the other. Similarly, it deals with other diseases like congenital clefts of lip and palate, brachial plexus injuries following trauma, cosmetic surgical procedures, limb salvage after road traffic accidents, gunshot injuries, etc which may seem unrelated to a casual observer.

But in reality, these seemingly unrelated and diverse problems share something which only plastic surgeons are trained for. We don’t have rules similar to other specialties but instead, we have our own philosophy… guiding principles passed on through generations.

It is these set of guiding principles that allow us to deal with problems of diverse nature and causes. Plastic Surgeons are therefore referred to as “Head to Toe Surgeons”.

As medical science progresses each day with an astonishing rate, role, and involvement of plastic surgeon is increasing.

Thanks to Microsurgery (part of Plastic Surgery) more and more limbs are being saved from amputations after road traffic accidents. Completely detached limbs and fingers are being attached routinely in India.

Complex reconstruction following oncosurgery is giving new lease of life to cancer survivors.

And then there is Cosmetic Surgery. The society is fast becoming global and boundaries of city/state or even Nations are now only on the political map. The thought process has undergone a sea change. now, everybody wants not only to work hard but also to feel and be more confident… to look better.

Cosmetic Surgery provides more and more procedures like hair transplant, LASERS, chemical peels, etc to enhance one’s looks. And now these are available in smaller cities and towns also. The only catch here is to find a certified and bonafide Plastic Surgeon.
